Carpenter - Seasonal Contract (Antarctica)

About the role

Amentum is hiring a seasonal contract Carpenter to support the National Science Foundation's United States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). The position is based at McMurdo Station and involves maintenance and construction work under the supervision of the Carpenter Foreman, PM Coordinator or Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, with tasking set by the ASC schedule and the candidate's prior experience.

Key responsibilities

• Perform rough framing and finish carpentry with a variety of materials and tools, and construction work in remote areas and adverse conditions
• Track material usage, update inventory records and coordinate materials with other departments
• Respond promptly to emergency service calls inside and outside normal hours, and document hours, tasks, materials and processes accurately
• Carry out work using design drawings, specifications and wiring diagrams, following SOPs and suggesting improvements
• Identify unsafe conditions, hazards or code violations and report them; work with other departments to plan and complete tasks
• Use computer-based labor, material and maintenance tracking applications, and deploy to remote research facilities for day trips or longer periods (McMurdo only)
• Take part in community programs such as house-mouse, daisy-picking, galley clean-up and recycling, and comply with ASC ESH, waste management and quality assurance requirements

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED
• At least four years of documented carpentry experience, including rough framing and finish carpentry
• Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods, with successful medical, dental, drug screening, background checks and US citizenship (required for facility credentials)
• Valid US driver's license; able to lift heavy loads, climb in and out of equipment and work outdoors in extreme cold

Required skills

• Ability to read and interpret design drawings, specifications and diagrams
• Prior computer experience and willingness to learn labor, inventory and maintenance tracking software
• Preferred: wilderness first responder, wilderness first aid or basic to advanced first aid training (McMurdo summer only); metal stud framing, drywall hanging and finishing, and experience in commercial or industrial construction
