Campus Safety Dispatcher

About the role

The Department of Public Safety at Pepperdine University seeks a Campus Safety Dispatcher to staff its 24‑hour communication center. The dispatcher will serve as the first point of contact for emergency and non‑emergency calls, ensuring prompt, courteous, and accurate response coordination across campus safety, fire, medical, and parking services.

Key responsibilities

• Operate radio, telephone, and CCTV systems in a 24‑hour dispatch center.
• Monitor CCTV feeds, alarm panels, electronic communications, and controlled‑access entrances.
• Dispatch public safety officers, fire, medical, and parking personnel based on priority, location, and resource availability.
• Track, monitor, and document officer activities throughout their shifts.
• Differentiate emergency from non‑emergency calls and prioritize accordingly.
• Enter detailed information into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system for every call.
• Provide excellent customer service by phone or at the reception center, fostering positive community relations.
• Collaborate with Public Safety staff and university members to maintain a professional work environment.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by Public Safety leadership.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Class C California driver’s license with a good driving record.
• CPR and basic first‑aid certification (or obtain within 90 days of hire).
• Ability to type at least 40 words per minute.
• Calm demeanor in emergency situations and strong telephone etiquette.
• Capacity to handle confidential information and exercise sound judgment independently.
• Flexibility to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours on short notice.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems.
• Experience monitoring CCTV and alarm systems.
