About the role

The Building Inspector conducts comprehensive inspections of residential and commercial structures to verify compliance with applicable building codes, regulations, and approved plans. The role also manages inspection‑related projects, provides technical guidance to the public and industry stakeholders, and supports business‑development initiatives. Travel to inspection sites across a large coverage area is required.

Key responsibilities

• Inspect residential and commercial buildings, including structural, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems, for code compliance.
• Research, read, and accurately interpret building codes, ordinances, and related statutes, and explain requirements to stakeholders.
• Produce detailed inspection reports, issue correction notices, and maintain accurate records with photographic evidence.
• Provide professional assistance and advice to homeowners, contractors, and permit‑issuing authorities.
• Lead or support inspection‑related projects, ensuring timelines, quality standards, and budget constraints are met.
• Assist the inspection management team with outreach, permit‑processing assistance, and other business‑development activities.

Required profile

• Associate degree in Engineering, Architecture, Building Inspection, or related field (preferred) or high school diploma/GED with 2+ years relevant experience.
• Minimum 2 years of journey‑level experience in municipal or county inspection services, construction trades, or general contracting.
• ICC certification or equivalent state‑recognized certification (mandatory); TSBPE Plumbing Inspector certification and a valid Texas driver’s license required.

Required skills

• Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Outlook.
• Experience using Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Photoshop.
• Digital imaging skills, including use of digital cameras and photo‑editing software.
