Bottom Longline Survey Technician (Level II–III)

About the role

We are seeking a Bottom Longline Survey Technician (Level II–III) to join A.I.S., Inc. on NOAA Fisheries’ Bottom Longline Survey and related SEFSC resource surveys in the western North Atlantic. The role involves shipboard leadership, biological sampling, and data management to support marine research and regulatory compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as Field Party Chief, Watch Leader, or Watch Stander, planning cruise logistics, preparing gear, and coordinating daily vessel activities.
• Collect biological and environmental samples, conduct trophic and life‑history studies on elasmobranchs and teleosts, and ensure QA/QC of all data.
• Maintain laboratory operations, process stomach‑content analyses, and contribute to peer‑reviewed publications.
• Collaborate with IT staff for data retrieval, act as ship/science liaison, and report progress to senior leadership.

Required profile

• Experience in marine field work, preferably on longline or similar fisheries surveys.
• Ability to lead small teams, manage logistics, and work safely aboard a research vessel.
• Strong attention to detail for sample handling, data entry, and quality assurance.

Required skills

• Proficiency in biological sampling techniques and laboratory maintenance.
• Knowledge of QA/QC procedures for scientific data.
