Biogeochemistry Laboratory Manager

About the role

Working Lands Conservation is launching an Ecosystem Services Laboratory to provide cost‑effective soil, water, and plant testing for ranchers and other land stewards. The Biogeochemistry Laboratory Manager will lead the development and daily operation of this new lab, ensuring high‑quality scientific output that supports adaptive land management.

Key responsibilities

• Partner with the Executive Director and Lead Soil Scientist to create and execute a business plan, including service packages and pricing.
• Develop and maintain partnerships with NRCS and other stakeholders, and promote the laboratory to potential clients.
• Oversee laboratory logistics, budgeting, and certification (NAPT/PAP).
• Supervise laboratory technicians and manage sample receipt, preparation, and analysis.
• Write and submit grant proposals to secure funding for laboratory operations.
• Develop marketing materials and strategies for laboratory services.

Required profile

• Proven experience managing a scientific laboratory or similar facility.
• Strong background in soil, water, or plant analysis and familiarity with regulatory certifications.
• Demonstrated ability to supervise staff, manage budgets, and develop business plans.
• Excellent communication skills for networking with producers, agencies, and partners.
• Experience in grant writing and fundraising is preferred.
