Backend Software Engineer

About the role

Shepherd is building a data‑driven commercial risk platform. As a Backend Software Engineer you will own large‑scale features that span data collection, automated underwriting and policy administration, working closely with underwriters, actuaries and product teams.

Key responsibilities

• Lead major initiatives and own end‑to‑end delivery of backend services.
• Collaborate across the stack and with underwriting, design and product teams to shape product strategy.
• Drive technical decisions, contribute to architecture and ensure high‑quality, scalable code.
• Mentor junior engineers and help build a strong engineering culture.

Required profile

• 5+ years of full‑stack engineering experience, comfortable shipping product daily.
• Enjoys ambiguity, takes ownership from conception to release, and cares about construction safety.
• Strong communicator who can explain technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
• Experience in insurance or InsurTech is a plus.
