Backend Software Engineer

About the role

Book of the Month’s Engineering team builds and maintains the web and mobile platforms that power our subscription service. We are looking for a Backend Software Engineer to design, develop, and sustain backend services and APIs that support both consumer‑facing applications and internal data pipelines.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and RESTful APIs using Node.js.
• Integrate with MySQL and PostgreSQL databases, ensuring performance and reliability.
• Collaborate with frontend developers to define API contracts and deliver implementations.
• Partner with product, design, and QA teams to translate requirements into robust software solutions.
• Write technical documentation, conduct code reviews, and contribute to automated testing suites.
• Support data engineering initiatives, building pipelines and working with Snowflake for analytics.
• Participate in on‑call rotation to maintain business continuity of critical services.

Required profile

• 2+ years of production‑grade experience with JavaScript/TypeScript and Node.js (4+ years for senior candidates).
• Hands‑on experience with relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL.
• Familiarity with writing unit, integration, and end‑to‑end tests.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work cross‑functionally.
