Avionics Engineering Intern (Summer 2027)

About the role

Impulse Space is hiring an Avionics Engineering Intern for Summer 2027, a 12-week internship from May/June through August/September 2027. The intern designs, manufactures and tests custom circuit boards and other end devices, working with software engineers, propulsion engineers and others on spacecraft electronics development, including PCB schematic and layout, bench testing and manufacturing.

Key responsibilities

• Produce schematics, layouts and manufacturing files for test and/or flight products
• Bring up new circuit boards, run tests on them and deploy them to where they are needed
• Work with engineers from other departments to test how avionics devices interact with fluids and propulsion devices
• Perform simulation and analysis of circuits and systems

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's program in Electrical Engineering or a related field
• Experience making your own PCBs
• Experience troubleshooting electronics problems at the board level or system level
• Ability to communicate technical challenges, explain rationale and resolve concerns
• Willing and able to work on-site in Redondo Beach, CA for the duration of the internship
• Role may require overtime hours, for which interns are eligible overtime pay

Preferred skills and experience

• Experience with batteries, solar arrays, motors, harnessing, sense elements or other non-PCBA electrical devices
• Teamwork with a mix of hardware and software engineers
• Vehicle development environment experience (cars, planes, rockets, satellites, drones, boats)
• Altium Designer

To comply with U.S. space technology export regulations (ITAR), candidates must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, protected individual or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State. Pay is $32 per hour.
