Automation/Digitalization Engineer

About the role

We are looking for an Automation/Digitalization Engineer to join BASF’s Performance Chemicals team in McIntyre, GA (or Savannah, GA). The role focuses on designing, developing and managing database systems that support our refining catalyst manufacturing plants, ensuring optimal performance, security and scalability.

Key responsibilities

• Act as the local contact for automation and digitization, coordinating area‑specific projects with the EVR digitization team.
• Collaborate with application developers to integrate database solutions into MES and other software applications.
• Monitor, tune and troubleshoot database performance, conducting regular health checks.
• Implement and maintain data security, access controls, backup and recovery strategies.
• Analyze business data requirements, translate them into technical specifications and database structures.
• Create customized dashboards, reports and digital application use cases.
• Coordinate external service providers and support the digital roadmap.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Automation Technology, Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or a related field.
• Experience as an Automation Engineer, Database Developer, Database Architect or a similar role.
• Strong problem‑solving abilities and teamwork orientation.
• Excellent communication skills to convey technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.

Required skills

• Python (or C#) programming.
• Database management, data modelling and performance tuning.
• Knowledge of database security, backup and recovery.
• MES integration and dashboard/report creation.
