About the role
The Auditor II is an independent professional responsible for complex, high‑priority audits of oil and gas lease and production sharing agreements for the State of Wyoming. This mid‑level position leads multi‑year audit projects, mentors Auditor I staff, and ensures compliance with state statutes and federal regulations.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct several complex audits per year covering full‑year lease and production sharing agreements.
- Perform multi‑period examinations to verify compliance with state statutes, lease agreements, and Board of Land Commissioners rules.
- Analyze legal contracts to confirm correct product pricing and allowable deductions.
- Direct and mentor Auditor I personnel, reviewing their work papers for accuracy.
- Review co‑workers’ audit files to ensure findings are evidence‑based and regulatory compliant.
- Consult with Royalty Compliance staff on challenging operational and financial issues.
- Prepare detailed audit reports and formal letters to companies regarding violations or payment demands.
- Engage with energy industry personnel to discuss findings and resolve conflicts of interest.
- Defend audit findings by testifying under oath or providing information to legislative committees and courts.
- Reconcile monthly reports to identify mismatches between production and reported figures.
- Travel to remote oil and gas sites, often in harsh conditions, to verify equipment locations and production volumes.
- Determine and assess appropriate interest and penalties for non‑compliant companies.
Required profile
- Understanding of oil and gas production, measurement, and sales processes.
- Knowledge of state statutes, lease agreements, and Board of Land Commissioners regulations.
- Ability to mentor junior auditors and lead audit teams.
- Strong analytical and written communication skills for preparing reports and formal correspondence.
- Willingness to travel to remote sites and work in challenging environments.
