Auditor – Abandoned Property (NY State Comptroller)

About the role

The Office of the New York State Comptroller is seeking qualified candidates to join its Abandoned Property audit team. Positions range from Auditor Trainee levels to Auditor 1, offering a purpose‑driven career in public‑sector accounting.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in auditing and investigating banks, insurance companies, utilities, stockbrokers, collateral loan makers, and other entities that may hold unclaimed property.
• Ensure accurate and complete reporting and timely remittance of unclaimed property to the State Comptroller.
• Travel daily within the New York metropolitan area and undertake weekly overnight trips out of state as required.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree with at least 24 semester credit hours in accounting and/or auditing (or equivalent graduate coursework).
• For Auditor Trainee 2: one year of professional accounting/auditing experience; for Auditor 1: two years of experience (or an advanced graduate degree with one year of experience).
• Eligibility for the NYHELPS (New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide) program.
• Ability to travel regularly and work independently.
