About the role
The Attorney II provides legal advice and guidance to the Sheriff’s Office leadership and staff on operational, administrative, and legal matters. The role works closely with the Gwinnett County Law Department and external counsel to manage litigation and ensure compliance with evolving laws and regulations.
Key responsibilities
- Supervise assigned staff, prioritize work, conduct performance evaluations, and make hiring or disciplinary recommendations.
- Provide legal advice on operational, administrative, and policy issues.
- Draft, review, negotiate, and interpret contracts, agreements, policies, ordinances, and other legal documents.
- Identify and mitigate legal risks while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
- Conduct legal research, analyze issues, and deliver written and oral opinions and training.
- Prepare and review pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery materials, and other litigation documents.
- Manage litigation matters, develop case strategy, coordinate discovery, and participate in hearings, trials, and settlements.
- Collaborate with the Gwinnett County Law Department, outside counsel, and other stakeholders on legal and operational matters.
- Respond to legal inquiries and provide updates on changes in laws and regulations.
Required profile
- Juris Doctorate degree.
- At least five years of experience practicing as an attorney.
- Member in good standing with the Georgia Bar and admitted to practice in the Superior Courts of Georgia.
- Ability to conduct thorough legal research and produce clear legal opinions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for interacting with staff, citizens, and elected officials.

- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws affecting law‑enforcement agencies.
