At-Sea Survey Technician / EM Reviewer

About the role

The At‑Sea Survey Technician/EM Reviewer will join the Gulf and Caribbean Reef Fish Branch of NOAA’s SEFSC Population and Ecosystems Monitoring Division. Working aboard NOAA research vessels and small craft, you will collect biological data, annotate video footage, and ensure high‑quality data entry for federal and state agencies.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as Survey Technician on NOAA ships and small research vessels for reef‑fish surveys.
• Perform equipment inventory, preparation, loading, cleaning and maintenance before and after each survey.
• Collect biological and environmental samples and log data according to SOPs.
• Annotate reef‑fish video footage using VIAME on Google Cloud Platform and conduct human‑in‑the‑loop review of automated outputs.
• Enter, upload and QA/QC annotated data in GCRF Oracle databases.
• Maintain annotation tracking sheets and update GitHub project tools.
• Participate in public outreach activities such as school visits and science fairs.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science or a related field (volunteer experience valued).
• Proficiency with word processing, database, statistical and graphics software; ability to write college‑level reports.
• Strong knowledge of fish, invertebrate and protected‑species identification keys, especially Gulf of America reef taxa.
• Understanding of endangered or threatened species.
• Current NOAA health questionnaire, tuberculosis screening, and tetanus vaccination.
