Associate/Senior Editor for BMC Surgery and Urology

About the role

The Associate/Senior Editor will support editorial handling and content development for BMC Surgery and BMC Urology, working in a hybrid setting from New York or Philadelphia. This role involves collaboration with editorial boards, internal teams, and external stakeholders to ensure high‑quality, impactful publications.

Key responsibilities

• Develop data‑driven journal development strategies aligned with BMC objectives.
• Identify, commission, and develop reviews, collections, and supplements.
• Oversee editorial handling of manuscripts, ensuring scientific rigor and novelty.
• Make editorial decisions, guide Editorial Board members, and maintain high standards.
• Resolve publishing and research integrity cases.
• Collaborate with internal teams to maintain author satisfaction and operational excellence.
• Lead Editorial Board meetings, recruitment, onboarding, and engagement.
• Partner with marketing to increase journal visibility through content promotion.
• Represent journals at conferences and networking events.

Required profile

• PhD or MD level (or equivalent) in surgery, urology or related discipline.
• Substantial editorial experience in scientific publishing (required for Senior level).
• Strong decision‑making, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to manage competing priorities, navigate ambiguity, and adapt to change.
