Associate Counsel

About the role

The Campaign Finance Board is seeking an Associate Counsel to support the enforcement of New York City’s campaign finance laws. This position works within the Legal unit, providing legal advice, conducting investigations, and representing the agency in various proceedings.

Key responsibilities

• Prosecute enforcement actions against campaigns and independent spenders.
• Appear before the five‑member Board for formal and informal complaints, reviewing and analyzing submissions.
• Draft administrative determinations and recommend civil penalties or other enforcement actions.
• Meet and correspond with campaigns regarding enforcement matters.
• Represent the agency in administrative hearings, collection actions, and Article 78 proceedings.
• Draft and analyze rules, legislation, and advisory opinions.
• Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda in response to inquiries.
• Provide counsel on records retention, FOIA, privacy, procurement, and contracting procedures.

Required profile

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree and admission to the New York State Bar.
• Experience in campaign finance, election law, or related governmental enforcement.
• Strong analytical and written communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple investigations and deadlines.
