About the role

The Cordele Judicial Circuit Public Defender's Office is seeking an Assistant Public Defender I to represent indigent clients in criminal matters across Ben Hill, Crisp, Dooly, and Wilcox Counties. This entry‑level position provides comprehensive legal advocacy from arraignment through sentencing in Superior Court.

Key responsibilities

• Provide competent and zealous representation to indigent clients charged with criminal offenses.
• Handle all phases of criminal proceedings, including arraignment, pre‑trial hearings, case investigation, plea negotiations, trial preparation, trial, and sentencing.
• Conduct legal research and draft case‑related documents.
• Investigate facts, gather evidence, and prepare cases for hearings and trials.
• Apply relevant federal, state, and local criminal laws to each case.

Required profile

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited institution.
• Active license to practice law in Georgia and good standing with the State Bar.
• Strong commitment to indigent defense and client advocacy.

Required skills
