About the role
The State of Georgia is seeking an Assistant Public Defender to join the Piedmont Judicial Circuit Public Defender’s Office in Barrow County. The attorney will provide zealous representation to indigent clients across all stages of criminal proceedings, ensuring fair access to justice.
Key responsibilities
- Attend court appearances, including arraignments, pre‑trial hearings, trials, and sentencing.
- Create and manage case files, record case data, and coordinate with court staff, clients, witnesses, and experts.
- Review discovery materials, interview clients and witnesses, and prepare motions, exhibits, and trial strategies.
- Negotiate plea agreements, conduct jury selection, present evidence, and make opening and closing statements.
- Assist senior defenders with case preparation and handle routine‑complexity matters independently.
Required profile
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited institution.
- Active membership in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia.
- Strong commitment to representing indigent clients in criminal matters.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
