About the role

The Piedmont Judicial Circuit Public Defender's Office is hiring an Assistant Public Defender (Attorney 2) to represent indigent clients in criminal matters before the Superior Court in Jackson County. This entry‑level position offers the opportunity to provide zealous advocacy and develop strong attorney‑client relationships.

Key responsibilities

• Attend scheduled court appearances, create and manage case files, and coordinate with court staff, clients, witnesses, and experts.
• Represent clients at arraignments, pre‑trial hearings, sentencing, post‑conviction hearings, and appeals, including negotiating, preparing motions, and presenting evidence.
• Review discovery, interview clients, request and inspect records, and prepare graphics and exhibits for trial.
• Identify and interview witnesses, subpoena witnesses, and prepare them for testimony.
• Assess the need for expert witnesses and psychological evaluations, and coordinate their involvement.

Required profile

• Juris Doctorate from an accredited institution.
• Current member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia.
• Commitment to providing competent and zealous representation to indigent clients.
