Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) – Fiber

About the role

The Kansas City Art Institute is seeking a collaborative, visionary faculty member for a tenure‑track Assistant Professor position in Fiber, starting August 2027. The role combines teaching, creative research, and service within a department that values material exploration, craftsmanship, and conceptual rigor.

Key responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate courses in weaving, yarn construction, dyeing, and related technologies across beginner to advanced levels.
• Develop and revise curricula that integrate fiber practice with fine art, fashion, interior, and architectural contexts.
• Maintain an active studio practice and contribute to scholarly and creative research.
• Provide service to the department, institute, and broader academic community.
• Mentor students from sophomores to seniors and support non‑major learners.

Required profile

• Extensive knowledge of woven structures, two‑ and three‑dimensional work, and the history of weaving.
• Experience teaching intermediate and advanced floor‑loom and Jacquard classes.
• Commitment to contemporary conceptual and technical approaches in fiber.
• Ability to foster an inclusive, supportive studio culture.

• Standard 8‑harness floor looms.
• Mechanical and computer dobby AVL looms.
• TC‑2 Jacquard loom operation.
• Fiberworks PCW software.
• Pointcarre software.
• Weaving techniques and yarn dyeing.
• Understanding of fiber properties and construction.
