About the role
The Assigning Editor will lead story sourcing and pitching for the social and viral news desk across multiple brands, focusing on social‑first stories and syndicated news.
Key responsibilities
- Monitor TikTok, Reddit and other social platforms daily to discover stories before competitors.
- Write clear pitches and provide context for writers, assign stories to staff and freelancers.
- Frame headlines for syndication on platforms such as MSN, Facebook and SmartNews.
- Track performance data and refine pitching strategies.
- Document discovery workflows and ensure story accuracy and proper credit.
Required profile
- Experience as an assigning, commissioning, news, trending or social editor in a fast‑moving digital media environment.
- Strong instinct for viral social content and understanding of US culture and audiences.
- Ability to work in a high‑volume, fast‑paced pitching environment.
- Knowledge of ethical journalism and data‑driven editorial decisions.
Required skills
- Excellent headline writing without being misleading.
- Comfortable using traffic data to guide editorial choices.
