Armed Groups/Regional Expert

About the role

The United Nations Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs is seeking an Armed Groups/Regional Expert to join a Panel of Experts supporting the Security Council Sanctions Committee. The position is home‑based and involves frequent regional and international travel in economy class.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor and investigate sanctions measures and alleged violations related to the Central African Republic (CAR).
• Analyse national and regional dynamics affecting armed groups in CAR, including cross‑border movements and external support networks.
• Track transnational aspects of sanctions breaches such as trafficking routes and supply chains.
• Engage with regional organisations, neighbouring Member States and sub‑regional mechanisms to gather information and support sanctions implementation.
• Assess the impact of political, security and economic developments on armed‑group activities and conflict dynamics in CAR.
• Identify patterns and trends in the regionalisation of armed groups, including recruitment, financing and logistics.

Required profile

• Demonstrated substantive knowledge of UN sanctions regimes and armed‑group dynamics.
• Experience analysing regional security issues, preferably in the Central African Republic or similar contexts.
• Proven ability to produce high‑quality analytical reports for senior UN officials.
• Willingness to travel frequently across regions and internationally.
