Application Developer – Map-based UI & Reporting

About the role

The Application Developer will support the research mission of IIHR—Hydroscience and Engineering and the Iowa Flood Center by designing, building, and maintaining map‑based user interfaces and interactive reporting tools. Working independently under the guidance of the Lead Application Developer, you will collaborate with faculty, research staff, and external partners to deliver reliable software solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Partner with users to define functional and technical specifications for limited‑scope solutions.
• Analyze information, organize analytic processes, and produce progress and project reports.
• Identify, troubleshoot, and debug software defects; propose and implement fixes.
• Review completed work to ensure compliance with specifications and regulations.
• Develop work plans, schedules, and resource requirements for computing projects.
• Prioritize concurrent projects, monitor progress, and adjust plans as needed.
• Assist in defining business system requirements and evaluate system functionality.
• Provide mentorship on software systems to staff and leadership.
• Communicate software concepts and project updates to faculty, staff, students, and internal teams.

Required profile

• Ability to work independently while receiving guidance from senior developers.
• Strong communication skills for interacting with academic and external stakeholders.
• Experience managing project tasks, deadlines, and deliverables in a research environment.
• Eligibility to work in the United States without university sponsorship.
