API Engineering Manager

About the role

Brightwell is seeking an API Engineering Manager to lead a team responsible for building and maintaining the core services that power its cross-border payment platform. The role combines hands-on development with people and process leadership, ensuring reliable, high-performance APIs for partners and customers.

Key responsibilities

• Write, review, and ship production C#/.NET code daily, working alongside the team.
• Guide the adoption of AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) and establish quality gates for AI-generated code.
• Define technical direction and architecture for the API domain, including versioning, error handling, authentication, and scalability patterns.
• Lead incident response and resolution for critical API and integration issues.
• Collaborate with product, engineering peers, and other stakeholders to align priorities and deliver projects on time.
• Manage a team of four engineers, conducting 1-on-1s, performance reviews, and career development planning.
• Identify and implement improvements in engineering processes, tools, and architecture.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading API or backend engineering teams.
• Strong hands-on background in C#/.NET development.
• Ability to balance coding duties with people-management responsibilities (≈50/50 split).
• Comfort working remotely with occasional travel to Atlanta (quarterly) and hybrid work for Atlanta-area candidates.
