About the role
The Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings (OATH) seeks an experienced legal professional to serve as an Administrative Law Judge in its Trials Division. The judge will manage the full lifecycle of cases filed by city agencies, from initial conferences through written decisions, ensuring fair and timely adjudication.
Key responsibilities
- Preside over pre‑trial settlement conferences and formal trials in accordance with OATH procedural rules.
- Adjudicate motions, legal requests, and evidentiary issues presented by parties.
- Research and apply relevant federal, state, and local laws to each case.
- Draft clear, well‑reasoned written decisions that summarize facts and legal analysis.
- Participate in special projects and initiatives within OATH.
Required profile
- Active license to practice law in New York State.
- Minimum five years of recent full‑time legal experience, preferably with litigation or neutral adjudication.
- Demonstrated ability to manage a diverse caseload efficiently.
- Judicial demeanor, including poise, discretion, patience, collegiality, and sound judgment.
Required skills
- Strong analytical and legal research capabilities.
- Exceptional written communication for preparing judicial decisions.
