Administrative Law Judge – Hearing Officer (Human Rights)

About the role

The Hearing Officer 1 (Human Rights) serves as an Administrative Law Judge for the New York State Division of Human Rights. This hybrid position offers remote flexibility while requiring occasional travel for hearings.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct formal public hearings on discrimination complaints under the Human Rights Law.
• Evaluate facts and legal arguments, subpoena witnesses, and receive testimony under oath.
• Prepare detailed reports of findings, conclusions, and recommendations for the Commissioner.
• Issue orders to dismiss cases, require corrective actions, or award compensatory damages.
• Rule on evidentiary objections, adjourn hearings, and ensure compliance with procedural rules.
• Research applicable statutes, regulations, and case law to support decisions.

Required profile

• Admission to the New York State Bar.
• At least four years of full‑time legal experience focused on human or civil rights enforcement under the New York State Human Rights Law or related anti‑discrimination statutes.
• Experience conducting trials, adversary proceedings, or quasi‑judicial hearings before a court of record or governmental agency.
