Administrative Law Judge – Hearing Officer (Human Rights)

About the role

The Hearing Officer 1 (Human Rights) serves as an Administrative Law Judge, conducting formal public hearings on discrimination complaints under the New York State Human Rights Law. This hybrid position offers remote flexibility with occasional travel.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct formal public hearings on alleged discriminatory practices in employment, housing, public accommodations, and other covered areas.
• Prepare detailed reports of findings, conclusions, and recommendations for the Commissioner.
• Issue orders to dismiss cases, require corrective actions, or award compensatory damages.
• Subpoena witnesses, receive testimony under oath, and evaluate exhibits and documentary evidence.
• Rule on objections to evidence admissibility and hearing conduct.
• Research and apply relevant statutes, regulations, and case law.

Required profile

• Admission to the New York State Bar.
• At least four years of full‑time legal experience focused on the promotion and protection of human or civil rights under the New York State Human Rights Law or related anti‑discrimination statutes.
• Experience conducting trials, adversary proceedings, or quasi‑judicial hearings before a court of record or governmental agency.
