Active Transportation Engineer – Durham

About the role

Alta is seeking an Active Transportation Engineer to join its Durham office. This mid‑career position focuses on designing sustainable bike and pedestrian infrastructure and delivering multimodal transportation solutions that improve safety and accessibility.

Key responsibilities

• Design and deliver complete street reconfigurations, bikeway networks, trail systems, and intersection improvements.
• Develop ADA‑compliant and high‑function pedestrian facilities for projects of varying scale.
• Collaborate with engineers, landscape architects, planners, graphic designers, outreach specialists, and data analysts.
• Lead tasks and assist in project management, mentoring entry‑level staff and contributing to onboarding and process improvement.
• Produce design documents from conceptual plans through detailed specifications.

Required profile

• Mid‑career professional with a passion for sustainable transportation.
• Experience working on multimodal projects in North Carolina or similar contexts.
• Ability to work both independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
• Strong communication skills for mentoring and stakeholder engagement.
