Accountant – Tax and Finance Specialist

About the role

The Department of Operational Support is seeking an Accountant to join the Income Tax Unit within the Payroll and Accounts Payable Section. The role focuses on tax reimbursement processes, financial analysis, and system development for UN tax operations.

Key responsibilities

• Provide advice, training and guidance on tax reimbursement policies to headquarters and field staff.
• Analyze tax returns, IRS transcripts and support Management Advice and Evaluation cases.
• Plan, supervise and test the UN Tax Portal and in‑house tax system (STARS) each year.
• Explain complex tax matters in simple terms to clients and coordinate with HR on immigration‑related tax impacts.
• Collaborate with Information Systems Officers, Umoja (SAP ERP) and other UN agencies on tax‑related projects.
• Contribute to business analysis and technical direction for financial information systems, including STARS, Umoja and the Tax Portal.

Required profile

• Relevant university degree in accounting, finance, tax or a related field.
• Experience in tax administration, preferably within an international or public‑sector environment.
• Strong analytical abilities and capacity to train and support staff on tax procedures.
• Excellent communication skills for interacting with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
