Accountant – Income Tax Unit

About the role

The Accountant will join the Income Tax Unit within the Payroll and Accounts Payable Section of the Division of Administration. Reporting to the Chief of the Income Tax Unit, the role supports the United Nations’ financial operations across headquarters, field offices, and peacekeeping missions.

Key responsibilities

• Analyse accounts and review regular financial reports from headquarters, field offices, and missions, identifying and resolving irregularities.
• Approve expenditures for services, supplies, equipment, and personnel in line with UN Financial Regulations and approved allotments.
• Maintain accurate accounting, reporting, and internal control systems and ensure proper record‑keeping.
• Prepare and consolidate financial statements for inclusion in UN Financial Statements and respond to audit observations.
• Provide advice on UN Financial Regulations, Accounting Instructions, and interpret transaction requirements.
• Coordinate processing of payroll, vendor claims, travel, and government account billing.
• Monitor, analyse, and approve transactions entered into the accounting system.
• Collaborate with systems units to define reporting requirements and support the development of accounting policies.

Required profile

• Professional knowledge of accounting principles, procedures and standards.
• Ability to apply conceptual, analytical and evaluative skills to complex financial data.
• Experience working within delegated authority in an international or multilateral environment.
