Accountant I

About the role

The City of Norfolk’s Department of Transportation is seeking an Accountant I to support grant‑funded programs. This full‑time role will manage both accounts payable and receivable functions, assist with payroll processing, and ensure accurate financial reporting for the department.

Key responsibilities

• Process incoming invoices, verify accuracy, route for approval, and enter data into the accounting system.
• Maintain vendor accounts, reconcile statements, and resolve discrepancies through written and verbal communication.
• Assist with grant billing preparation, enter receivable documents, and reconcile receipts against reimbursement requests.
• Perform internal audit tasks, track documentation, monitor transaction timeliness, and resolve variances.
• Compile reports, gather data, and conduct research for vendor contracting, payments, and receipts.
• Serve as liaison between vendors, funders, and department staff while delivering excellent customer service.

Required profile

• Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
• Experience with grant‑funded accounting or public‑sector finance preferred.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple financial documents accurately.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills for interacting with vendors and internal teams.
