Accountant – Finance & Accounting Team

About the role

Refugees International is seeking a detail‑oriented Accountant to join its Finance and Accounting team in Washington, DC. Reporting to the Director of Finance and Accounting, you will ensure accurate financial recording, support grant‑funded projects, and help maintain compliance with GAAP and nonprofit reporting requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Process high‑volume vendor invoices, verify W9/1099 and OFAC documentation, and enter expenses in Sage Intacct.
• Record donations, revenue, stock donations and related sales, and reconcile with Development records monthly.
• Prepare bank and investment account reconciliations and manage employee credit‑card and travel‑advance reconciliations.
• Create and post journal entries, maintain the general ledger, and handle payroll journal entries and quarterly tax filings (Form 941).
• Assist with departmental and organization‑wide budgeting, budget‑vs‑actual reporting, and project budget development.
• Support month‑end close, annual audit preparation, and Form 990 documentation.
• Promote financial controls, recommend policy improvements, and ensure fraud prevention.

Required profile

• Experience in nonprofit accounting with strong attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines.
• Familiarity with GAAP and nonprofit reporting standards.
• Willingness to work onsite in Washington, DC.

Required skills

• Sage Intacct accounting system.
