Ablebodied Seaman – Deck Department

About the role

The Ablebodied Seaman works in the deck department of a training ship, performing watch‑standing duties and day‑time maintenance tasks. This position supports safe navigation, vessel upkeep, and emergency preparedness.

Key responsibilities

• Stand wheel, anchor, gangway and roving watches, maintaining course and communicating steering orders.
• Perform general deck maintenance: chipping, scraping, soundings, priming, painting, and cleaning of hull, decks, superstructure, cargo gear, smokestack, lifeboats, rescue boats, life rafts, and damage‑control equipment.
• Learn and operate emergency, lifesaving, and damage‑control equipment; conduct safety inspections and launch lifesaving gear as required.
• Assist with other duties assigned by senior deck officers.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Previous experience aboard ocean or inland vessels.
• Active AB Special license (or higher) and U.S. Coast Guard‑approved Adult CPR and Basic First Aid (current).
• TWIC, qualified lifeboat man, STCW with RFPNW endorsement, current USCG medical certification and passport.
• Physical ability to lift moderate weights, climb ladders, and work in varied weather conditions.
