Writing and Math Partners (WAMP) Coordinator

About the role

The Education Justice Project (EJP) at the University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign seeks a part‑time coordinator to lead the Writing and Math Partners (WAMP) tutoring program at Danville Correctional Center, a medium‑security state prison located about 35 miles east of campus. Reporting to the EJP Academic Director, the coordinator will ensure high‑quality tutoring services for incarcerated students and support a collaborative learning environment.

Key responsibilities

• Manage and support WAMP tutors, ensuring sessions are adequately staffed each week.
• Develop and deliver onboarding and training for new tutors.
• Track program files, attendance records, recruitment documents and policy letters.
• Organize occasional gatherings for tutors to share ideas and solve problems.
• Maintain active awareness of best practices regarding community learning centers, writing centers, and allied learning spaces.
• Participate in monthly EJP coordinator meetings, the annual retreat, and other leadership activities.
• Evaluate program performance in communication, monitoring, nurturing and decision‑making, and set SMART goals.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree (advanced degree preferred).
• Tutoring or comparable instructional experience.
• Strong interpersonal and online communication abilities.
• Ability to obtain Department of Corrections clearance.
• Commitment to social‑justice principles.
