Undergrad Co-op – Chemical Engineering (Drug Substance Technologies Synthetics)

About the role

Amgen's Drug Substance Technologies Synthetics organization in Cambridge, Massachusetts is looking for an undergraduate student for a 6-month co-op placement from January to June 2027. The co-op uses synthetic organic chemistry and chemical engineering principles to learn process scale-up of small-molecule intermediates and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) from early- to late-stage development, serving R&D, clinical and commercial partners. Candidates must be able to relocate, as a transportation allowance is provided for eligible candidates.

Key responsibilities

• Learn the principles of process scale-up of small-molecule intermediates and APIs using synthetic organic chemistry and chemical engineering.
• Interact with scientists and engineers implementing advanced manufacturing technologies for multiple product modalities.

Required profile

• 18 years or older.
• Currently enrolled in a full-time Bachelor's degree program with a 3.0 minimum GPA or equivalent.
• Expected to complete one year of study before the co-op starts and to remain enrolled after it ends.
• Located in the United States during the co-op and available to work full-time.
• Authorized to work in the U.S. for the duration of the program; sponsorship for future full-time roles is not guaranteed.
• Preferred: concentration in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry and/or Data Sciences with an interest in organic synthesis and chemical engineering.

Required skills

• Preferred: hands-on laboratory experience, flow chemistry, biocatalysis, lab automation, and data analysis with Python.
• Strong interpersonal, project management, analytical and quantitative skills, and strong communication and problem-solving abilities.
