Tooling Research Engineer – Precision Tool Design

About the role

3M is seeking a Tooling Research Engineer to drive the design and development of specialized tooling that enables the creation of innovative products. You will translate concepts and technical requirements into precision‑machined molds and act as a bridge between laboratory innovation and manufacturing execution.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with NTI/NPI teams to design new tooling from concept through launch.
• Work with production staff to transfer micro‑replication tool processes and implement improvements.
• Lead process optimization and continuous improvement of tool manufacturing to achieve world‑class quality.
• Develop, document, and execute new test methods using data‑driven decision making.
• Create and protect intellectual property related to tooling designs.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Industrial, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (completed before start date).
• At least three months of CAD experience in a professional environment.
• Experience with precision machine tools, M&G code, and geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T) is highly desirable.
