Tax Support Specialist

About the role

As a Tax Support Specialist at Check, you will own a portfolio of federal, state, and local tax agencies, handling notices, filings, and partner inquiries from start to finish. You will act as the primary liaison between tax agencies and our payroll partners, ensuring timely and accurate resolution of tax issues.

Key responsibilities

• Own end‑to‑end tax workflows for a defined set of agencies, including notice resolution, correspondence, corrections, and ongoing compliance.
• Directly contact tax agencies, navigate their processes, and follow through until issues are fully resolved.
• Communicate clearly with partners about tax notices and account status, translating complex agency interactions into understandable updates.
• Balance and reconcile tax accounts, surface discrepancies, and drive resolution.
• Manage a queue of tax issues, prioritizing urgency and complexity while maintaining visibility.
• Identify systemic patterns in the portfolio and alert appropriate stakeholders.

Required profile

• 3–5 years of experience in payroll tax, tax operations, compliance, or notice resolution.
• Comfort communicating with tax agencies by phone and writing clear updates for partners.
• Experience with federal (IRS/SSA), state, and local agencies, plus ability to research unfamiliar agencies.
• Highly organized and methodical, able to manage multiple open issues without slip‑ups.
• Proactive problem‑solver who escalates thoughtfully and owns outcomes to completion.
