Substation Physical Engineer III – High Voltage Design

About the role

The Engineer III – Substation Physical Design leads the physical design of high‑voltage substations that enable renewable‑energy interconnections. This hands‑on, production‑focused position requires strong engineering judgment, the ability to work independently in ambiguous environments, and close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

Key responsibilities

• Develop complete physical substation design packages, including general arrangement drawings, equipment layouts, bus arrangements, grounding, lightning protection, and conduit/raceway plans.
• Produce high‑quality AutoCAD drawings and 3D substation models that adhere to Revamp standards.
• Coordinate with protection & control, civil, structural, and power systems teams to deliver integrated design solutions.
• Review sub‑consultant deliverables for technical accuracy, quality, and schedule compliance.
• Support client interactions, present design assumptions, and respond to technical feedback.
• Ensure all designs comply with company, industry, trade, and jurisdictional safety codes.
• Develop work plans, mentor junior staff, and contribute to detailed design tasks across multiple projects.

Required profile

• Associate’s degree or higher in an engineering discipline (Bachelor’s preferred); candidates without a 4‑year degree may be considered for a “Substation Designer III” role.
• 5+ years of relevant substation physical design experience.
• Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD, including 3D design.
• High level of independence paired with sound judgment and strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Organized, detail‑oriented, and able to manage fast‑turn assignments.

• AutoCAD (2D & 3D)
• 3D substation design tools such as Inventor, Bentley, or Revit
• Grounding and lightning‑protection layout
• Conduit/raceway layout design
• Python scripting for automation (preferred)
• PLS‑CADD for transmission line design (preferred)
