Student MLS Employee – Blood Bank

About the role

The MLS Student Employee – Blood Bank supports the Blood Bank/Transfusion Services laboratory while gaining hands‑on experience in clinical laboratory science. Working under the supervision of qualified laboratory staff, the student assists with routine blood‑bank activities, specimen processing, testing, documentation, and helps maintain a safe, organized work environment. The role offers exposure to transfusion medicine practices and prepares students for future clinical laboratory careers.

Key responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care by supplying appropriate blood components.
• Issue blood and blood components to clinical floors.
• Follow the Massive Transfusion Protocol for trauma cases.
• Communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, and other UAMS staff regarding blood‑bank services.
• Receive and verify blood‑bank specimens, ensuring proper labeling and collection.
• Document testing results and maintain accurate records.
• Assist with inventory management of blood products and supplies.
• Participate in safety and quality assurance activities within the Blood Bank.
• Perform additional duties as assigned to support the Blood Bank.

Required profile

• HS Diploma or GED.
• Current student in a Medical Laboratory Science program.
