Staff Research Engineer – Discovery Team

About the role

Anthropic is building an AI scientist capable of tackling long‑term reasoning and scientific discovery. As a Staff Research Engineer on the Discovery Team you will work end‑to‑end on the most critical blockers to scientific AGI, turning research ideas into production‑ready systems.

Key responsibilities

• Identify and eliminate bottlenecks across the full model stack that impede progress toward scientific AGI.
• Design and implement solutions for long‑horizon task completion and complex reasoning in scientific workflows.
• Scale prototype research ideas into robust, production‑grade pipelines.
• Create benchmarks and evaluation frameworks to measure model capabilities in computer‑use and scientific tasks.
• Build and optimise distributed training systems and performance‑critical infrastructure for large‑scale models.

Required profile

• 8+ years of experience in machine‑learning research and engineering.
• Deep familiarity with large‑scale language model training, evaluation, and inference pipelines.
• Proven ability to iteratively solve immediate technical blockers while keeping long‑term goals in focus.
• Strong collaborative mindset and track record of shipping ML systems that handle multi‑step reasoning.

• Containerisation and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud deployment at scale.
• Reinforcement‑learning approaches for complex task completion.
