Staff Geospatial Data Science Engineer

About the role

Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies are building the data foundation for next‑generation software‑defined electric vehicles. As a Staff Geospatial Data Science Engineer you will lead the creation of high‑definition, dynamic maps that power vehicle localization, routing, and advanced driver assistance systems.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build, and optimise scalable pipelines that ingest, clean and segment billions of daily vehicle sensor observations into map features.
• Apply advanced statistical modelling and machine‑learning techniques to detect real‑world changes such as road closures or new lanes.
• Develop robust map‑matching, trajectory‑smoothing and sensor‑fusion algorithms to convert noisy probe data into high‑fidelity road geometry.
• Lead system architecture for spatial data platforms, ensuring low‑latency queries, efficient spatial indexing (e.g., H3, S2) and scalable vector/raster storage.
• Collaborate with embedded software engineers, perception teams and cloud architects to align onboard capabilities with cloud‑based mapping services.
• Stay current with emerging big‑data, computational‑statistics and automated‑mapping technologies.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Geoinformatics, Robotics or a related quantitative field.
• Proven experience building large‑scale data pipelines and statistical models for spatial data.
• Strong analytical mindset with a track record of delivering production‑grade mapping solutions.
• Ability to work autonomously in a senior, problem‑solving role.
