Staff Attorney

About the role

The Staff Attorney will serve as an on‑the‑ground immigration attorney delivering limited‑scope legal services across multiple regions of New York State, focusing on vulnerable immigrant populations. The role includes supervising up to two full‑time legal staff and collaborating with internal teams and external partners.

Key responsibilities

• Provide direct limited‑scope immigration services such as asylum, SIJS, TPS applications, EOIR filings, bond or habeas petitions, and eligibility screenings.
• Supervise and conduct final reviews of work performed by Senior Paralegals, Paralegals, and Legal Assistants, setting expectations and supporting professional development.
• Address rapid‑response needs, support special projects, and serve as a legal resource for partner organizations and stakeholders.
• Contribute to data collection, tracking, and reporting to ensure transparency and efficiency of legal service delivery.

Required profile

• Licensed attorney admitted to practice in New York with 1–3 years of immigration law experience.
• At least 1 year of supervision experience of legal staff.
• Bilingual English‑Spanish speaker with strong community organizing and advocacy skills.
• Commitment to NYIC’s mission and ability to work in fast‑paced, changing environments.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Legal Server, Salesforce, Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets), Canva, and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Strong attention to detail in preparing applications and legal documents.
