Sr. Battery Engineer

About the role

We are seeking a senior Battery Engineer to lead the design, development, integration, and qualification of spacecraft battery systems. This hands‑on individual contributor will take battery concepts through to flight‑ready hardware, working closely with power electronics, avionics, thermal, mechanical, and software teams.

Key responsibilities

• Own architecture and development of spacecraft batteries from concept to flight qualification.
• Design battery packs, module architectures, and electrical interconnects (laser welding, wire bonding, busbars).
• Develop a Battery Management System (BMS) with cell‑balancing, SOC/SOH estimation, fault detection, and protection strategies.
• Select cell chemistries (NMC, NCA, LFP, Li‑CFx) based on mission performance, energy/power trade‑offs, and reliability.
• Perform battery sizing, capacity analysis, degradation modeling, and lifecycle assessments.
• Define thermal management requirements and collaborate on thermal runaway mitigation and cold‑survival heating.
• Lead integration, validation, environmental qualification, and acceptance testing (vibration/shock, TVAC, outgassing, abuse testing).
• Investigate performance, reliability, and failure modes; conduct root‑cause analysis and corrective actions.
• Support manufacturing, supplier selection, DFM/DFT reviews, cell matching, weld quality inspection, and production readiness.

Required profile

• Senior‑level engineer with hands‑on experience taking battery systems from concept to flight.
• Proven ability to work cross‑functionally with power electronics, avionics, thermal, mechanical, and software engineers.
• Experience with space‑grade qualification standards (GEVS, NASA‑STD‑7001, ECSS, ASTM E595).

• Failure analysis and root‑cause investigation
• Manufacturing support, DFM/DFT, cell matching/sorting, X‑ray/CT weld inspection
