About the role
The State of Georgia’s Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities is seeking a SOAR Disability Benefits Specialist to support individuals experiencing homelessness, serious mental illness, or co‑occurring substance use disorders. The position is hybrid, with three days per week in the Decatur field office and up to 40% travel to meet clients in non‑traditional settings.
Key responsibilities
- Participate in and facilitate SOAR trainings, providing technical assistance to community providers, hospitals, and state agencies.
- Complete SSI/SSDI applications, compile medical evidence, and assist clients in accessing disability benefits.
- Coordinate with social workers, case managers, the SSA, and other service providers to ensure comprehensive client support, including housing and health services.
- Maintain accurate client records, produce monthly performance reports, and ensure timely charting of all activities.
- Represent the department at community meetings and collaborate with the PATH program to help clients transition to mainstream benefits.
Required profile
- Minimum two years of direct experience working with homeless individuals who have serious mental illness and/or co‑occurring substance use disorder.
- Valid Georgia driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- High school diploma/GED plus three years related experience, or equivalent lower‑level experience.
- Ability to work in non‑traditional environments, travel extensively, and prioritize tasks quickly.
- Preferred: Master’s degree in social services or related field and 2‑5 years of experience with government programs.
