Sign Language Interpreter

About the role

The Sign Language Interpreter will facilitate communication between deaf or hard‑of‑hearing students and faculty by providing accurate American Sign Language interpretation during lectures, discussions, and campus activities. The interpreter works as a respected member of the university community, ensuring equal access to educational content.

Key responsibilities

• Contact professors each semester before classes begin to clarify the interpreter’s role.
• Interpret lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and announcements accurately, asking for clarification when needed.
• Maintain a professional and respectful attitude, follow the Code of Ethics for Professional Interpreters, and participate in staff meetings and workshops.
• Position yourself where the student, teacher, and board are clearly visible, and refrain from participating in class discussions.
• Use technology, including email, internet navigation, and Zoom, to support remote or hybrid activities.
• Provide mentorship to intern students when assigned and collaborate with the Coordinator of Interpreter Services for any issues.

Required profile

• Oklahoma QAST Certification as an American Sign Language Interpreter or transliterator.
• Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience in Human Resources, Education, or a deaf‑related field.
• Ability to communicate receptively and expressively with deaf/hard‑of‑hearing students and to multitask in a fast‑paced environment.
• Knowledge of interpreting and transliteration services in an educational setting.
