Senior Underwriter

About the role

Shepherd is a technology‑driven Managing General Underwriter building a fast, smart commercial risk platform for high‑hazard industries. The Senior Underwriter will leverage data, automation and underwriting expertise to deliver faster decisions, smarter pricing and better risk outcomes for builders and operators.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and negotiate pricing, coverage, terms and conditions for new business and renewals.
• Identify and target accounts that fit Shepherd’s underwriting appetite.
• Collaborate with internal product, data and engineering teams to ensure underwriting decisions are data‑driven and efficient.
• Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining high quality and compliance.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 + years experience in commercial underwriting (construction, casualty, or builder’s risk preferred).
• Strong work ethic, self‑motivation and ability to thrive in an ambiguous, fast‑paced startup environment.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills, high EQ and proven sales/marketing ability to position accounts and close deals.
• Demonstrated success in new‑business development, producer management and negotiation with internal and external partners.

Required skills

• Solid background in risk analysis and construction/casualty underwriting.
• Knowledge of compliance, coverage, product structures and pricing strategies.
