Job description
About the role
Applied Materials is seeking a Senior Precision Stage Architect (E5) to lead the end‑to‑end architecture of high‑precision motion stages and their mechatronic subsystems. The role combines mechanical design, actuation, sensing, metrology and motion‑control to deliver nanometer‑class positioning performance for semiconductor and display equipment.
Key responsibilities
- Define and design complex precision‑stage mechanical components and mechatronic subsystems, integrating mechanics and controls as a co‑designed system.
- Set the control‑system architecture, including servo‑loop topology, feed‑forward strategy, sensor/actuator selection and performance targets such as positioning accuracy, repeatability and settling time.
- Develop dynamic models of stage mechanics, integrate them with control design, and specify position‑feedback metrology (laser interferometers, encoders, capacitive/optical sensors).
- Lead prototype build, qualification, and testing of stage designs, including vibration isolation, disturbance rejection and compliance with safety standards (SEMI S2/S8/S14, NFPA 79, CE, EMI/EMC).
Required profile
- BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics or Controls with 10–15 years of relevant experience; MS preferred.
- Demonstrated expertise in precision motion, stage control and multidisciplinary integration across mechanics, electronics, algorithms and software.
- Proven ability to solve complex, cross‑disciplinary problems and to guide multidisciplinary teams through concept to production.
Required skills
- Mechanical design and analysis (structural dynamics, resonances, mass‑stiffness budgeting).
- Motion‑control engineering (servo‑loop design, multi‑axis tuning, feed‑forward, trajectory planning).
- Metrology integration (laser interferometry, encoders, capacitive/optical sensors).
- Real‑time control hardware (motion controllers, FPGA/DSP, drives, amplifiers).
- Vibration isolation, disturbance rejection and damping strategies.
- Compliance with industry safety standards (SEMI S2/S8/S14, NFPA 79, CE, EMI/EMC).
What we offer
- Salary range $163,000 – $224,000 per year.
- Supportive work culture with opportunities for learning, development and career growth.
- Comprehensive health, wellbeing and benefits programs.
