Senior Heavy Equipment Mechanic (Aviation - Civil Service)

About the role

The City of Dallas is seeking a Senior Heavy Equipment Mechanic to provide senior‑level expertise in the installation, repair, and maintenance of stationary plant equipment, vehicles, and heavy automotive equipment supporting aviation operations.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and perform complex mechanical work on heavy equipment, overseeing other mechanics to ensure quality and timely completion.
• Diagnose equipment failures, troubleshoot issues, and implement repairs in accordance with manufacturers' specifications and safety protocols.
• Inspect and test completed work, assign work orders, and track inventory of parts and supplies.
• Provide training, demonstrate proper work methods, and enforce safety standards for the maintenance team.

Required profile

• High school diploma/GED or equivalent experience.
• At least four years of preventative maintenance experience on mechanical, electrical, HVAC, or heavy plant equipment.
• Valid driver’s license with a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License; Texas CDL required if obtained out‑of‑state.
• Ability to read and interpret manufacturer manuals, diagrams, and technical instructions.

Required skills

• Mechanical repair and preventive maintenance of heavy equipment.
• Use of hand tools and diagnostic equipment.
• Knowledge of EPA Section 609, air brakes, truck steering and suspension systems.
• Leadership and ability to direct technicians.
