Senior Editor – Investigative Journalism (Washington)

About the role

ProPublica, an independent nonprofit newsroom, is seeking a Senior Editor in Washington to lead a team of investigative reporters covering immigration, national security, the justice system, money in politics, and related beats. The role focuses on guiding high‑impact, accountability‑driven journalism that uncovers harmful practices by powerful entities.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise a team of five reporters, ensuring stories are ambitious, creative, and impactful.
• Guide story selection, project conception, and execution from investigative planning to publication.
• Edit stories for structure, logic, and narrative quality, including line editing and big‑picture oversight.
• Collaborate with data, research, video, and audience teams to enhance reporting.
• Champion accountability journalism and support reporter development.

Required profile

• Minimum five years of experience editing investigative or accountability journalism.
• Proven ability to manage complex, multipart investigations and public‑records requests.
• Strong news judgment and experience coaching reporters on challenging beats.
• Commitment to ProPublica’s mission of public‑interest journalism.
