Senior Editor, Accountability and Investigations

About the role

The City Reporter seeks an experienced Senior Editor to lead accountability and investigative journalism that uncovers corruption and protects the public interest across New York City.

Key responsibilities

• Conceive, edit, and oversee ambitious investigative projects targeting powerful institutions and businesses.
• Coach reporters to pitch and execute at least one major investigation annually.
• Build and maintain a pipeline of investigative leads through public records, information requests, source cultivation, and data analysis.
• Manage long‑term, multi‑reporter projects involving external partners, complex data sets, visualizations, and legal reviews.
• Ensure investigations are clear, compelling, and rigorously fact‑checked, coordinating with counsel as needed.

Required profile

• 10+ years in journalism with at least 3 years editing investigations and a proven record of public‑interest impact.
• Deep passion for New York and commitment to local accountability reporting.
• Strong judgment, ability to maintain high journalistic standards under pressure, and experience mentoring reporters.

Required skills

• Investigative reporting methods, including public‑records requests and source cultivation.
• Data acquisition and analysis for investigative projects.

• Salary range $140,000‑$165,000 depending on experience.
