School Custodian – Harrison County School District

About the role

The Harrison County School District is seeking a dedicated Custodian to maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors across its facilities and grounds.

Key responsibilities

• Keep buildings, classrooms, corridors, restrooms, and common areas tidy through daily sweeping, mopping, dusting, trash removal and disinfecting.
• Maintain exterior areas including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots and play fields by sweeping, shoveling, blowing debris and performing seasonal snow removal.
• Operate and maintain cleaning equipment such as carpet extractors, floor scrubbers, burnishers and vacuum cleaners.
• Manage grounds‑care tools including lawn mowers, weed eaters, edgers, tractors, brush cutters and blowers.
• Monitor and adjust heating, ventilation and air‑conditioning systems for comfort and energy efficiency.
• Inspect doors, panic bolts and safety devices daily; report any issues to the principal and district custodial supervisor.
• Perform routine window cleaning, floor hosing, and sanitation of drinking fountains.

Required profile

• Successful completion of a criminal background check and child abuse registry check as required by Mississippi law.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions and adhere to safety protocols.
• Physical capability to lift up to 50 lb, bend, squat, kneel, stand for long periods and work outdoors in two‑hour intervals.
• Valid motor vehicle driver’s license or reliable personal transportation.

Required skills

• Operating carpet cleaning machines, floor scrubbers, floor burnishers and vacuum cleaners.
• Using grounds‑maintenance equipment such as lawn mowers, weed eaters, edging machines, tractors, brush cutters and leaf blowers.
